Our Story

The Texas African American Lawyers Foundation is a voluntary, nonprofit organization established in 2024, dedicated to championing the advancement and empowerment of African American legal professionals throughout Texas. Through membership and dedicated programs, our vision is to develop a robust community network of attorneys, judges, and other legal professionals committed to driving meaningful change in our community.

Background and Founding

TAALF was founded by a group of passionate advocates —former chairs and board members of the African American Lawyers Section of the Texas State Bar—who recognized a critical need to complement and support its efforts.  In response to escalating attacks on diversity initiatives and challenges with pipeline programs aimed at increasing the number of African American attorneys, these visionaries created TAALF as a proactive platform. The Foundation was conceived to provide robust support on important legal issues impacting minorities and to be a vocal, active advocate for policies and programs essential for African American lawyers to succeed in today’s environment.

Our Priorities

  • Legislative Advocacy: We aim to actively engage in the Texas legislative process by addressing, influencing, and navigating legislation that directly impacts African American attorneys.

  • Leadership and Mentoring: A primary goal is to offer leadership training and mentoring to future and current African American legal professionals, equipping the next generation of legal leaders with the skills and confidence they need to excel.

  • Networking and Professional Development: TAALF will serve as a vital resource by connecting attorneys across the state of Texas through networking events, targeted programming, workshops, and other initiatives. These opportunities are designed to foster collaboration, support professional growth, and build a strong community among African American legal professionals.

Organized as a 501(c)(6) professional membership organization, TAALF is committed to utilizing its assets exclusively to further our mission. Our structure allows us to support our community through the provision of networking opportunities, programming, and resource sharing, ensuring that every initiative reinforces our commitment to the advancement of African American legal professionals. No part of our net earnings will benefit any individual privately, and our operations will always align with our organizational purpose.
